Gyan happy with underdogs tag

Asamoah Gyan is happy for Ghana to be looked upon as underdogs heading into the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The striker was at the centre of a torturous exit in South Africa four years ago, missing a penalty in the dying moments of extra-time with Ghana s quarter-final with Uruguay locked at 1-1.

Gyan showed admirable mental strength to step up and score Ghana s opening spot-kick in the ensuing shootout, but they were ultimately knocked out as Uruguay prevailed 4-2 to progress.

Four years on, Ghana have been drawn in a tough-looking Group G alongside Germany, Portugal and the United States, but the Al Ain forward is relishing being written off.

We have been rated as underdogs in the group, which we are happy about, Ghana told 7msport.com.

Spanish media bemoan ´global failure´

The Spanish media have lashed out at Vicente del Bosque s side after Spain were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.

The reigning world champions suffered a 2-0 defeat to Chile at the Maracana, ensuring they will miss out on a spot in the round of 16, after the Netherlands had earlier prevailed 3-2 over Australia in Group B.

Wednesday s results saw the Netherlands and Chile move to six points each, while Australia and Spain sit third and fourth respectively on zero and Del Bosque s men await a brutal reception when they head home, judging by the headlines in their local media.

Spain s most popular newspaper El Pais declared Espana fue el Titanic (Spain was the Titanic), while their main rival El Mundo labelled the team s elimination as Fracaso Mundial (Glob…

Real Madrid and the Curious Case of Karim Benzema

If Zinedine Zidane’s departure came as a surprise to Real Madrid fans, then it’s definitely fair to say Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to pack his bags and move to Turin came as a proper shock.

As Los Blancos prepared to head into the new season without two men who were directly responsible for three consecutive Champions League titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018, a question imposed itself:

Who would be the new leader of Real Madrid?

Filling up the void Portuguese superstar left behind was always going to be a difficult challenge and that’s one of the main reasons Real Madrid are given to repeat the last year’s success at the international level.

Real Madrid supporters were quick to divert the attention to the club record signing, Gareth Bale. The Welshman …

Madrid should sign Hazard ahead of Neymar – Courtois

Thibaut Courtois would choose Eden Hazard ahead of Neymar as a blockbusting signing for Real Madrid this year.

Courtois played alongside his Belgium international team-mate for four seasons at Chelsea before moving to the Santiago Bernabeu last August.

The Spanish capital has frequently been touted as a future destination for Hazard, who is yet to commit to the Premier League club beyond the end of next season.

Madrid s market activity has been somewhat at odds with the Galacticos era over recent transfer windows and interim head coach Santiago Solari and his predecessor Julen Lopetegui have felt the effects of Cristiano Ronaldo not being replaced following his July departure to Juventus.

Ex-Barcelona star Neymar is reported to remain a Madrid target, but…

Playing with Donnarumma is like playing with Buffon – Bonucci

Playing alongside Gianluigi Donnarumma is similar to playing with Gianluigi Buffon, according to Leonardo Bonucci, one of Italy s Euro 2020 heroes.

Donnarumma saved two penalties in a 3-2 shootout success over England in the final on Sunday, as Italy became European champions for the second time after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

The 22-year-old, who is set to join Paris Saint-Germain following the expiration of his Milan contract, denied Jadon Sancho before keeping out Bukayo Saka s penalty, which the Arsenal teenager needed to convert to keep England s hopes alive.

It sent the Wembley crowd from euphoria to despondency, with Jordan Pickford having just kept England in it with his second save of the shootout – the Everton goalkeeper parrying Jorginho s effort onto t…

Burkina Faso axe coach Duarte

Paulo Duarte has been fired as Burkina Faso coach following a decision from the country s football federation.

The Stallions lost all three of their Africa Cup of Nations matches at the tournament, ending their disappointing campaign at the bottom of Group B.

Defeats to Ivory Coast, Angola and Sudan spelled the end for the Portuguese coach.

Burkinabe Football Federation chairman Zambede Theodore Sawadogo revealed the news on Friday via a national radio station, saying that Duarte had failed to impose himself as leader of the group during the tournament.

Sawadogo added that assistant trainer Mocktar Baro will coach the team in their February 29 friendly match against Morocco.

Guardiola pays homage to players

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to his players and says their success in recent seasons is fully deserved.

Guardiola has won 13 trophies since taking charge at the Catalan club in 2008, including three La Liga and two Champions League titles.

But the 41-year-old is eager to shift credit to his players.

Let it be clear to everyone, we ve won so much simply because we ve been better than the rest, Guardiola told reporters.

Winning 13 out of 16 titles is all down to the athletes. In the end this game always belongs to the players.

We ve won because we ve got some fantastic players. This is all down to the athletes, who have performed so well over the whole period.
